HHS varsity teams split games against Halstead
It was a great night for the girls, but a not-so-good one for the boys.
Visiting Halstead swept into town Tuesday evening and split a pair of games against the Trojans, with the girls team faring much better than their male counterparts. The girls' team won 67-30, but the boys lost 51-46.
The girls' squad had a stellar defensive night, netting 22 steals from the visiting Dragons.
On offense, the team took good care of the ball, turning it over just eight times. Some good shooting didn't hurt either: the Lady Trojans made 50 percent of their two-point shots and 80 percent of their free throws.
The victory was definitely a team effort, with five players scoring seven or more points. Leading scorer on the night was Sara Thiessen, with 14 points. Jill Hein led the way defensively with six steals.
The win gives Hillsboro an 8-1 record in the MCAA, and keeps them 13-3 overall.
The second game of the night at the Robert C. Brown gymnasium didn't have quite the same positive outcome for the Trojan boys.
Hillsboro started strong, ending the first quarter with a 10-9 lead and eventually taking a 23-20 lead into halftime.
But Halstead's offense stepped up to the challenge in the second half, tying the score at 38-all by the end of the third period.
And the Dragons kept going, outscoring the Trojans 13-8 in the final period to hand Hillsboro a 51-46 loss.
The visiting Dragons clamped down on two of Hillsboro's main perimeter threats: Andy Brubacher and Tyler Weinbrenner. Weinbrenner, who had scored 27 points against Wichita Collegiate on Friday and 37 points against Haven on Tuesday, scored just four in the Halstead game. Fellow guard Brubacher was held to just five points.
The teams next face Hesston on Friday night.
