HHS volleyball team loses to Swathers
Hillsboro High School varsity volleyball team might be road weary and looking for a home court advantage after its second consecutive loss away from home.
The Trojans traveled to Hesston Tuesday night, losing 25-23, and 25-17 in the first match and 25-21 and 25-15 in the second match.
Coach Sandy Arnold felt the team did not take advantage of Hesston's mistakes in the first match.
"They missed several serves and gave us many free balls," she said, "and we couldn't always capitalize."
Senior Amy Duerksen was 29-30 in sets with 10 assists and senior Emily Ratzlaff was 6-6 in serves. Junior Laura Skiles was 6-8 in attacks with two kills. Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm was 10-11 in attacks with four kills and 4-4 in digs. Sophomore Tina Frick was 5-8 in attacks with four kills.
Hillsboro did not make adjustments to Hesston's changes in the second match and played on the defensive, scrambling more than setting up its offense.
"To be effective, we must be the aggressor," Arnold said, "and make the other team scramble."
The sophomore duo of Chisholm and Frick led the team. Chisholm was 9-11 in attacks with four kills and 4-6 digs. Frick was 10-13 in blocking with two ace blocks. Duerksen was 23-25 in sets with 10 assists and junior Laura Lindsay was 7-7 in serves.
The Trojans, 1-2 in away games, return home Tuesday after three weeks of road trips to take on the Vikings of Smoky Valley. Game time is 5 p.m. They will have two more home appearances, against Halstead Oct. 11 and the Trojan Invitational Oct. 16.
