HHS wrestlers take home third place

Sorensen, Davis victories help Trojans oust Wamego for third at Herington

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team took third place at the Charles McMillen Tournament Saturday in Herington, following Abilene, who took first, and Chapman, who took second.

Led by seniors Wade Sorensen and Ronnie Davis, winning first place victories in the 189-pound weight class and the 275-pound weight class, respectively, the Trojans were able to beat out Wamego by two points.

Sorensen gave a valiant effort in the championship final round defeating Dan Berges of Onaga, 5-1.

"After Wade's match, we were down by two points," said assistant coach Scott O'Hare, after the meet. "We knew we needed a win from Ronnie, going into that last match, in order to move past Wamego to take third place."

In that final match, Davis delivered, giving up nearly 60 pounds and seven inches in height against his Wabaunsee opponent Chris Eberwein. In an exciting and not short of a heroic finish, Davis defeated Eberwein, 6-4, sealing the third place trophy for the Trojans for the second year in a row.

Other team members advancing to the championship finals were Carson Greenhaw and James Bina, who each placed second in their respective weight classes. Bri Ratzlaff and Danny Yoder placed third in their respective weight classes, and Ryan Janzen placed fourth in the consolation finals.

"The guys wrestled well," said Head Coach Corey Burton. "We only took nine of our wrestlers, and there was some good competition for them at this tournament."

"We practiced last week on wrestling aggressively, and the guys did just that," Burton said. "It was exciting coming down to that last match."

The team traveled to Minneapolis last Thursday and split duals against Haven and Minneapolis. The Trojans defeated Haven 39-30 and lost to Minneapolis 53-30.

"We held out three of our varsity players," said Burton.

The varsity team will compete in the Halstead Tournament in Halstead slated for Jan. 11 and 12. Starting times are 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

"We'll take about 11 wrestlers to this tournament," Burton said. "Everybody will have to place as high as they can and wrestle well in order for us to place in the top three."

The junior varsity will compete in a tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Abilene.
