HHS wrestlers take third at SES dual tournament
Staff writer
Hillsboro High School varsity wrestlers competed Saturday in the Southeast of Saline wrestling dual tournament. Six teams competed: Minneapolis, Southeast of Saline, Hillsboro, Marion, Remington, and St. John's Academy.
Minneapolis placed first, winning all of their dual matches. SE of Saline was second, and Hillsboro finished third. Marion finished fourth, Remington fifth, and St. John's sixth.
Hillsboro ended the day with a 3-2 record.
The Trojans defeated Marion, 44-33; St. John's, 66-0; and Remington, 42-30.
"We had a rough start at the beginning going up against Minneapolis," head coach Scott O'Hare said. "We were just wrestling flat."
"After that match I had a talk with the players and they came out fired up after that for the rest of the day," O'Hare said.
O'Hare said some of his wrestlers had good wins and gained some valuable experience.
Up next for the Trojans is the MCAA league tournament Saturday at Haven. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
With Marion added to the league tournament this year, the format will be an eight-man bracket instead of round robin.
According to O'Hare, Marion felt they could go ahead and start to compete this year.
"I'm not sure how the other teams are in the league," O'Hare said. "A round robin tournament is double elimination, but eight-man brackets makes it harder."
O'Hare said next year the league officially will add Marion and Hoisington, making 12 schools in the MCAA league.
