Hillsboro approves cooperative wrestling program

If you go to Goessel High School and you've been wanting to wrestle, next year you'll have your chance.

At its monthly meeting Monday night, the Durham-Hillsboro-Lehigh school board approved a cooperative wrestling agreement between the Hillsboro and Goessel school districts. Hillsboro and Marion had a similar arrangement several years ago.

Athletic director Max Heinrichs estimates that two or three Goessel students will probably participate next year.

According to the agreement, the team would still go by the Hillsboro Trojans, even with a few GHS players on the squad. But at state competition, individual wrestlers will compete for Goessel High School.

All practices and meets will be held at Hillsboro High School, as normal. Goessel fans will be admitted to the meets with their normal activity passes. The coaches will be employed by USD 410, and the Goessel students will follow their own school's eligibility rules.

As for financing the program, the total costs — including coaches' salaries, transportation, entry fees, paying officials — will be divided between the Hillsboro and Goessel districts according to the percentage of students involved in the program. For example, if 15 Hillsboro students and 5 Goessel students participated in wrestling next year, USD 411 would be responsible for 25 percent of the program's costs.

Goessel will pay its own costs for transporting students to and from Hillsboro for practices and competition.
