Hillsboro athletes compete at state weightlifting

Another Kansas state champion: Yoder takes first in 165 weight class

Several Hillsboro High School athletes competed in the Class 3A state weightlifting championships held last Saturday in Marion.

Hillsboro boys scored 20 points and placed sixth among 16 teams. The girls scored seven points and tied with Phillipsburg for 10th place.

In the boys' division, senior Alan Yoder received a first place medal in the individual 165-pound weight class, scoring a total of 955. Yoder also placed second in the 114-165 class for best lifters — placing first in bench (183.04), second in clean (193.02), and third in squat (259.58).

Senior James Bina placed third in the individual 172-weight class scoring a total of 835. Junior Tyler Stout placed fourth in the individual 132-weight class scoring a total of 615.

In the girls' division, sophomore Amy Duerksen placed third in the 148-power classes in the bench press, scoring 93.56. She also placed fourth in the individual 165-weight class with a total of 485.

Senior Cheryl Prieb placed fifth in the individual 114-weight class with a total of 290. Sophomore Whitney Washmon placed sixth in the individual power class with a total of 480.
