HILLSBORO: Baseball squad splits with Wildcats

After throwing a scare at the defending champion and current front-runner in Class 4A Nickerson Panthers, the Trojans should have had no trouble with a team like Tuesday's opponent, the hosting Moundridge Wildcats.

Only if the Trojans' defense could slam the door on the Wildcats.

And it was something they couldn't do in the Tuesday's opener as the flood gates opened in the bottom of the first inning, even with Jared Metcalf on the mound.

Moundridge used a quintet of Hillsboro errors and a seven-run onslaught in the bottom of the first to hold off the Trojans, 13-11.

Metcalf took the defeat as Hillsboro dropped its fourth consecutive game.

In a pair of slugfests that saw James Bina send five pitches deep for home runs on the day, including three in the nightcap, Hillsboro snapped the slide with a 21-6 pounding.

Dustin Jost and Andy Brubacher each homered twice and Ben Walker homed once.

The shoe was on the other foot in the finale with the Trojans bolting out the gate early to race to a 9-0 lead.

Shawn Hughbanks fired a six hitter to pick up the easy win.

The 6-4 Trojans travel Friday to struggling Wichita Collegiate for a 4:30 p.m. start.
