HILLSBORO: Bina, Yoder take third at wrestling tourney

Hillsboro split at home dual meet against Haven, Minneapolis

Staff writer

Hillsboro High School head coach Corey Burton took five of his varsity wrestlers to compete in the Herington Tournament held Saturday in Herington.

Eleven teams competed in the tournament with HHS wrestlers James Bina and Daniel Yoder placing third in their respective weight classes.

Also competing at the tournament were Ryan Janzen, Tim Glahn, and Billy Winegarner.

"We had some tough matches up there," said Burton. "Probably pound for pound it was their toughest tournament."

"We had some close matches — some went to overtime, and others were lost by the score of 2-0."

Burton said that his wrestlers will have to learn how to win those tight ones in order to get prepared for state.

Last Thursday, the Hillsboro team split its home dual against Haven and Minneapolis. Hillsboro won 42-22 over Haven and lost 49-24 to Minneapolis.

"Haven was a big win for us," Burton said. "We went into that match hoping to keep our dual record alive, and we did that."

Hillsboro is now 4-0 in league competition.

"Minneapolis was a tough team; they were pretty full," he said. We went for individual efforts during this match."

Burton will take his five wrestlers along with Andrew Bina to the Halstead Tournament held at 4 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

"Halstead is a good tournament," Burton said. "We'll be just fine. We have kids who will have opportunities to make the finals. We just have to go out and do it."

The younger wrestlers will compete Friday in the JV tournament at Abilene. That meet begins at 4:30 p.m.
