It was another near perfect day for a track meet with temperatures in the mid '70s with just a little breeze. The Hillsboro High School boys' track team continued their quest in obtaining first place plaques. So far, they have won first place in the last four major meets this season.
The boys racked up the team points at the second annual James Thomas Invitational track meet held last Friday at Reimer Field on the Tabor College campus. The Trojans scored 140 total points in front of second place Smoky Valley with 95, and third place Marion with 94. Eleven schools competed at the meet.
"We knew coming into this meet that Smoky Valley would be giving us good competition," coach Dennis Boldt said. "It ended up that both Smoky Valley and Marion scored well, pushing us through the final events."
Boldt continued saying that the boys have many events in which they have consistently scored well, For instance, the team has scored well in the pole vault, long, high, and triple jumps, the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays, as well as the 400 meter, the 200 meter, the 100 meter dashes and the 800 and 1600 meter runs.
According to Boldt, it was the improvement of the younger athletes that "really pushed the boys' team over the edge" to win the meet. Kyle Jilka placed fourth and threw his personal best in the shot put while Kody Borg placed fourth in the 3200 running his personal best time.
Derek Mayfield placed second in the triple jump, and Clinton Schneider placed sixth in the hurdles. Brodie Unrau who placed second in the high jump with a jump of six feet, his personal best, and Tim Funk placed third jumping his personal best.
"These are efforts that make a track team successful in the final standings," Boldt said.
With only a few members on the team, the girls managed to place fifth at the invitational scoring 66 points. Andrea King placed second in the discus and fifth in the shot put. Mindy Munguya placed third in the triple jump, and Charity Davis placed first in the long jump, her personal best so far this year.
"This got us off on the right foot going into the running events," Boldt said.
Alisa Jost finished first in the 400 meter dash followed by Davis who took second. The girls' 4x400 relay team of placed first and 4x100 team took second.
Up next for the team is the Hesston Invitational held today at 4 p.m. in Hesston.
Peabody
The teams competed at the Peabody quad track meet last Tuesday at Peabody with the boys' team taking first and the girls placing third. Schools competing were Canton-Galva, Peabody-Burns, Sterling and Hillsboro.
