HILLSBORO: Boys take first at Marion track invite

Girls team takes third

Staff writer

On a nearly perfect day, the Hillsboro High School boys' track team managed to come away with a first place plaque at the Marion Invitational track meet held last Friday in Marion.

With 11 schools competing, Hillsboro boys scored 129.5 total team points, followed by Smoky Valley with 84 points and Marion with 80 to round out the top three teams.

"Our marks were good for the first meet," head coach Dennis Boldt said. "Multiple scoring really made a difference for us."

First place individual finishers were Alan Yoder in the 100 meter dash; Caleb Marsh in long jump and pole vault; Aaron Yoder in the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter run.

The boys' 4x400 meter relay took first place.

In the girls' division, Hillsboro placed third with a team total of 70 points following first place Chase County with 101 and second place Smoky Valley with 86 for the top three team finishers.

"I felt our girls had an exceptional showing for our first invitational," Boldt said. "Each athlete or relay team who scored finished in the top three places of their event."

"We simply had a good first day and have set marks which we look to improve on."

Mindy Munguya and Charity Davis were individual first place finishers in the triple jump and long jump, respectively.

Twenty-six members of the team competed at the Sterling quad meet on Tuesday in Sterling.

Boldt explained that each athlete can only compete in eight track meets, so he did not send all of his team at the Sterling meet.

"I'm sending some of the younger boys in the hurdles and shorter distances along with the distant runners," Boldt said. "Also, I'll send some of the younger girls to compete in the field and running events."

The teams will compete at 3:30 p.m. today at the Smoky Valley Invitational in Lindsborg.
