Hillsboro Community Foundation is formed

Hillsboro Community Foundation (HCF) met Tuesday evening for an informational meeting. The newly-formed organization was created to improve the quality of life in Hillsboro and the surrounding area.
Board member Delores Dalke said the foundation would allow Hillsboro to use tax credits to help with funding of community improvements that might otherwise have to be funded through tax increases. It also will allow the community to apply for grants for which it didn't previously qualify.
The objectives of HCF are to advise and assist donors, receive grants and bequests, seek grant moneys, and assist other non-profit entities in establishing endowments.
Although HCF is newly-created, chairman Mike Kleiber said the founders have been discussing the benefits of forming a foundation for two or three years. However, the initial investment was too high. Therefore, the foundation was created as an affiliate of the Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation, Inc., and will benefit from its resources. Loren Friesen of the Newton foundation also is a director of HCF.
Two seats on the foundation board of directors currently are vacant, and community members were asked for suggestions for members. Ideas for community improvements and contributions for start up costs are needed as well.
Not only is HCF looking for ways to improve the community, but vice chairman Brad Bartel said, "It is a vehicle for people to give back to the community."
