Hillsboro Family/Folk Fest promises lots of fun

Don't leave town!

Thanks to the Hillsboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, Memorial Day weekend right here in Hillsboro promises to be entertaining, educational, and fun for the whole family.

The third annual Hillsboro Family/Folk Festival will begin downtown at 6 p.m. Friday, when the 100 block of East Grand will be blocked-off for a block party. The three-day celebration ends at 9 p.m. Monday when swimmers close out the opening day of the Family Aquatics Center.

Also on tap this weekend is the Hillsboro High School all-school reunion, a classic car show, a parade, and a demolition derby.

"We expect more people this year than ever," said event organizer Christy Wulf. "Great participation makes for great events, so we hope everyone will come out to kick off the summer."

The first thing to know about the Family/Folk Festival is that an event button is the key to a good time.

Buttons are $5 each and are available at Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and at the various venues on the day of the festival. A button will provide entry for all events except the all-school reunion and demolition derby.

At the block party, button wearers will be treated to free food (while it lasts), music and get-togethers with friends. Music will be provided by the Stuchlik Polka Band, and 5-man Trio.

— Saturday begins early with a fly-in and breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at Schroeder Field. Airplanes will be on display from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by Marion County Aviation EAA Chapter 1301.

— The Family Festival 5K run and a one-mile walk/run for youth will begin and end near the front porch of the visitors' center at Memorial Park. Late registration starts at 7:30 a.m.; the races begins at 8 a.m.

— Also beginning at 8 a.m. is all-day golf at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course. The course will be open to everyone. A greens fee will be charged.
