Hillsboro FFA chapter competes in events

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter participated Feb. 13 in the south-central district poultry judging and food science career development event at Marion High School.

The event was hosted by Marion and Arkansas City FFA chapters.

The senior team of Alex Jost, David Winter, John Hein, and Mieka Serene placed fourth in poultry judging.

Jost was third individually and Hein placed 10th.

Other senior team members included Andy Klassen, Brandon Brown, Heather Goldsby, and Dianne Sanders.

The greenhand team of Ethan Frantz, Darren Mueller, Dylan Delk, and Landon Herbel placed second overall. Frantz was third individually.

Poultry judging includes evaluating the interior and exterior of eggs, evaluating and placing past production hens, identifying parts of a chicken, evaluating carcasses, and grading chicken parts.

Members also participated in the food science event, which consisted of an aroma test, triangle test, food safety photos, and a written test.

The senior team of Briana Loewen, Alex Jost, David Winter, and Mieka Serene placed first. Jost was seventh and Winter placed 10th.

Other participants were Taryn Mayfield, Brandon Brown, Andy Klassen, Heather Goldsby, Dianne Sanders, Ty Goossen, Brea Allen, John Hein, Ethan Frantz, Darren Mueller, Dylan Delk, and Landon Herbel.
