HILLSBORO: Golf team competes at league
Hillsboro placed fifth overall at the MCAA league golf meet, held Monday in Halstead.
The Trojans' 362 total points put them at fifth in a field of seven teams. Wichita Collegiate had the highest score with 313. Hesston came in second with 318, and Nickerson took third with 349.
Individually, Hillsboro's Lance Bartel performed the best among his teammates with an 88 to take 17th place out of 41 players. Randy Klassen came in two places later with an 89.
At numbers 24 and 25 were Billy Winegarner and Andrew Bina, who shot 92 and 93, respectively. No. 29 was Derek Hamm with 98, and No. 36 was Jordan Allen with 104.
Marion County invite
Fourteen schools converged upon Marion County last Friday for the Marion County Invitational golf tournament, which took place at the Hillsboro and Marion courses.
Hillsboro managed to take ninth place overall as a team in the 36-hole category — that's 18 holes of golf at Hillsboro and 18 at Marion. No Trojans medaled at the event.
The Hesston team took first place overall, with Council Grove claiming second and Cheney taking third.
Justin Ahlers of Bennington took the first-place medal at the Hillsboro course by shooting a 69 to beat out Cheney's Zac Potter, who was the runner up with 70. But the roles were reversed at the Marion course, with Potter earning a 71 and Ahlers taking home a 70.
But Ahlers took home the overall first-place medal with the tiebreaker.
At their home course, the Trojans shot an overall 350, and at Marion they shot 366.
Individually, Hillsboro's Bina finished highest among his teammates, shooting an 81 on his home course and an 87 at Marion. The next-best player for Hillsboro was Winegarner, who made an 83 at home and a 94 at Marion.
Rounding out the Trojan team was Bartel with 91 at Hillsboro and 94 at Marion, Ricky Johnson with 103 at Hillsboro and 91 at Marion, Hamm with 95 at Hillsboro and 107 at Marion, and Klassen with 108 at Hillsboro and 94 at Marion.
