HILLSBORO: HHS hosts JV wrestling tourney
The Robert C. Brown Gymnasium was the scene last Saturday for the first annual junior varsity tournament hosted by Hillsboro High School. The tournament had previously been hosted by Hesston, who did not want to host both a varsity and a junior varsity tournament for two weekends in a row.
According to coach Corey Burton, HHS officials made the decision to take over the JV tournament.
"This is a great facility (R.C. Brown Gymnasium) to host an event like this," Burton said.
Sixteen schools competed in the round-robin tournament including area schools Marion, Hesston, Chase County, and Lyons. Other schools competing included Pratt, Wellington, Hoisington, Circle, Abilene, Clearwater, Douglass, Garden Plain, and Maize.
Hillsboro had nine wrestlers (sophomores and freshmen) compete in the tournament.
"The kids wrestled well," Burton said. "We made some mistakes, but we learned some valuable things out there."
The JV team will compete at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the Abilene tournament in Abilene.
The varsity wrestlers will resume competition tonight at home in a double dual with Minneapolis, Haven and Marion. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The varsity wrestlers will also compete at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Herington Tournament in Herington.
Burton will take only five wrestlers — the junior and senior members on the squad.
