HILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL: JV boys win own tourney

The Hillsboro High School junior varsity boys were in complete control last Saturday at their own junior varsity tournament, winning the championship game against Berean Academy 63-44.
"This was a hard-fought game," said coach Kory Unruh. "Berean gave it their all."
"I was pleased with our ability to play against a team we didn't know," Unruh said. "Their zone defense definitely slow us down. It wasn't a quick blowout like the team has been used to, but we steadily increased our lead to a win."
In the other games on Saturday, Hesston placed third by defeating Halstead 73-34. Inman placed fifth by defeating Marion 61-56. Moundridge placed seventh after defeating Herington 59-36.
Leading the way in scoring for the Trojans was Eric Weinbrenner with 20 points.
Other scorers were Aaron Yoder with 14 points; Derek Hamm, seven points; Daniel Deckert and Toby Berg, six points each; Kyle Jilka, five points; Tyler Goldsby, three points; Michael Bookless, two points.
In the Feb. 8 games, Hillsboro defeated Hesston 54-44 and Herington 84-24.
Leading scorer against Hesston was Weinbrenner with 20 points. Other scorers were Hamm with 13 points; Jilka and Deckert, six each; Yoder, five; and Berg, four.
In the game against Herington, the Trojans were led by Weinbrenner, Yoder, and Deckert with 12 points each. Other scorers were Jilka with 11 points; Hamm 10 points; Kyle Kroeker, eight points; Goldsby and Sammy Espada, six points each; Berg, four; and Luke Lilly, three.
"I was pleased with the whole tournament, Unruh said. "It was good to win our own tournament this year."
The JV team is now 17-0.
Last Friday, the team hosted Sterling and dominated the Black Bears 76-26.
Leading scorers for the team were Yoder and Deckert with 10 points each followed by Hamm and Espada with nine points each.
On Feb. 11, the team pounded the Lyons Lions 65-32 at Lyons.
Leading scorers were Weinbrenner with 17 points followed by Jilka with 10, Berg with nine, and Hamm and Deckert with eight each.
The team traveled to Halstead on Tuesday to take on the Dragons and will play Wichita Collegiate on Friday in Wichita.
