HILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL: Lady Trojans drop two

After several solid wins at the Southeast of Saline tournament, the Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team has struggled during the past two games.

Tuesday night, the team traveled out west to take on MCAA foe Lyons. The Lady Trojans had an up-and-down game, ultimately losing in overtime 46-41.

Hillsboro started out the first quarter slowly as Lyons jumped out to a 12-7 lead. But the Trojans turned on the defensive pressure in the second quarter, limiting Lyons to just five points.

By halftime, the Lions led by just two, 17-15.

Hillsboro really hit the gas in the third quarter. They jumped ahead of Lyons behind Emily Ratzlaff's two three pointers. And while their offense stepped up, so did their defense — the Trojans limited Lyons to just four points in the quarter.

At the end of the third, Hillsboro had a 27-21 lead.

But Lyons was back in the fourth, outscoring Hillsboro 16-10 in that period and sending the game into overtime.

The Trojans couldn't hang in OT, and they lost the game 46-41.

Katie Fast was the team's leading scorer on the night with 17 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals. Ratzlaff had 10 points with seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

Ellinwood

A monster first quarter from Ellinwood was all it took to put Hillsboro away Friday night.

The Ellinwood Lady Eagles started the game in a big way, outscoring the Trojans 19-6 in the first quarter en route to their 51-45 win in Hillsboro.

Although Hillsboro's offense seemed nonexistent in the first quarter, it came back with a vengeance in the second. The Trojans scored 18 points in the second quarter behind a stellar shooting performance by senior April Funk.

In the second quarter, Funk scored 12 points, including two three-point shots. She would go on to score 20 points overall on the night, making four of five from two-point range and four of five from beyond the three-point arc.

But even Funk's stellar performance wasn't enough to get Hillsboro back on track. At the end of three quarters, Ellinwood still held a 41-32 lead and went on to claim the 51-45 victory.
