The Hillsboro High School wrestlers had some tough competition in Hays this past weekend. None of the state qualifiers were able to advance and bring home a medal.
"The guys did a great job," coach Corey Burton said. "There was some really tough competition at Hays. There were some tough tight matches. But in order to medal at state you have to have everything going your way on those tight ones."
James Bina (160), the lone senior of the team, ended the day with a 1-2 record.
"We'll miss James," Burton said. "He led the room every day. The other kids will have to step in and fill that void."
Bina has broken some of the career records of the HHS wrestling program. He has the most takedowns with 208 and the most wins with 117.
For the 2002-03 season, Bina leads in the most takedowns with 77, the most falls with 21, the most reversals with 27, the most escapes with 25, and the most wins with 35.
Hillsboro will lose one state qualifier to graduation, but they have three returning — Danny Yoder (140) with 29 wins for the season, Ryan Janzen (119) with 27 wins, and Tim Glahn (145) with 18.
Yoder and Janzen both finished the day with a 1-2 record, and Glahn finished with a 0-2 record.
"Danny, Ryan, and Tim have all gained some valuable experience by going to state," Burton said.
"We had a young team this year," he said. "Hopefully we have learned some things this year, and those guys will need to step in those vacant varsity spots."
