HILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL: Wrestlers split dual against Halstead, Marion

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestlers managed to get a split out of their home dual meet last Thursday. The Trojans won 36-33 against the Halstead Dragons, but came up short against the Marion Warriors, 45-24.

"We knew we would come up short this year on the dual meets because our numbers are down," head coach Corey Burton said.

"Danny Yoder wrestled pretty sharp that night," Burton said. "In both matches he did a good job."

Against the Marion Warriors, the Trojans did not fair so well. Hillsboro gave up three open weight classes and had only four wins.

"The match would have been a lot closer if not for the opens — the opens definitely hurt us," Burton said.

Burton said the team will continue to concentrate on wrestling individually and improving their individual skills for now. Because of their low numbers, gaining team points will be difficult in dual meets.

On Saturday, four members of the varsity wrestling team traveled to Hesston to compete in the Hesston Invitational Tournament.

Hillsboro placed seventh among 15 teams present, scoring 61 points.

Senior wrestler James Bina, (160), won first place with a 4-0 record for the day.

"James beat the kid who beat him twice last year," Burton said. "With the score tied, 2-2, and just six seconds left, James did a double-leg takedown to win the match, 4-2, and first place."

The team will compete at 5:30 p.m. today in a dual meet in Marion with Hesston and Chase County.
