HILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL: Wrestlers take Stafford meet
Staff writer
The Hillsboro Trojan wrestlers opened their season with a win at the dual meet last Thursday in Stafford facing off against Stafford and Nickerson.
"Both teams were low in numbers this year, lower than ours were," head coach Corey Burton said, "so there were some open weight classes."
"We also bumped up some kids to the higher weight classes, and they handled that real good when they moved up."
In the match against Stafford, Hillsboro won 57-18.
"Stafford's numbers were way down this year," he said.
Stafford had six weight classes open for that night.
In the match against Nickerson, Hillsboro won 39-27.
"I didn't know how we'd do against Nickerson," Burton said. "It was a good win for us since Nickerson is in our league — it was a good league victory."
"Overall, the freshmen surprised me, and they picked up some good wins for us," he said.
The team will host a dual meet today at 6 p.m. with Marion, Haven, and Halstead.
The varsity wrestlers will compete at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Hesston Tournament in Hesston. Burton said he will take only the junior and senior wrestlers to this meet.
