Hillsboro High School tennis team opened the season Aug. 30 by playing host at the Hillsboro Tennis Invitational.
The Trojans split up into two teams, Gold and Red, and finished fourth and sixth respectively.
"We played ok," head coach Lynn Wiebe said. "At times we hustled very well and made very good shots. At other times we failed to play to win."
Amanda Faber led the way for the Trojans Gold team. She knocked off Quivera Heights' Cassaundra Bosquez 8-1 and Nickerson's Tiffany Scofield 8-0 to reach the finals in the number one singles bracket. There, she was upended by Heidi Boese of Hesston for a second-place finish.
Lauren Just turned a first-round loss into a fifth-place finish for the Red team in the number two singles bracket after defeating teammate Maria Loewen, 8-4.
Hillsboro's number one doubles Gold team duo of Lora Andrews and Danielle Hagen defeated Hillsboro's Red duo of Loewen and Hannah Marsh.
Another Trojan match-up in the fifth-place match of the number two doubles tournament featured Julia Loewen and Anna Woelk versus Greta Wiebe and Chelsey Harmon. The duo of Wiebe and Harmon came out on top 8-6.
"The team has been working very hard in practice for the past two weeks," coach Wiebe said. "It's encouraging to see a lot of young players who are working very hard and have improved a lot since last year."
Sterling Invitational
HHS competed Thursday at the Sterling Invitational for its second meet of the season.
The Trojans took fifth place out of eight teams. Farber and Andrews played together for the first time and took third place in the number one singles after an 8-4 victory against a duo from Hutch Trinity.
