Hillsboro hosts sub-state
Varsity girls
play SES Tuesday
Sporting an 11-8 record, the Hillsboro High School varsity girls are seeded No. 4 going into the first round of the KHSAA 3A sub-state basketball tournament to be held in Hillsboro.
The Trojans will take on No. 5 seed Southeast of Saline at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Robert C. Brown Gymnasium.
Winner of the Hillsboro-Southeast of Saline game will play the No. 1 seed Hesston on March 5. Hesston claimed a bye and will not play Tuesday.
Haven
The Trojans defeated Haven, 55-42, Tuesday at Haven.
Emily Ratzlaff led the Trojans, scoring a game-high 17 points, cashing in two three-pointers. Ratzlaff was 100 percent from the two and three-point range and missed only one foul shot. She also had four rebounds, three assists, and two steals for the night.
Katie Fast scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had five blocked shots.
Amy Duerksen and JuliAnne Chisholm chipped in eight points each and grabbed six and five rebounds, respectively.
Marissa Diener scored two three-pointers, and Hannah Marsh scored five points.
Wichita Collegiate
What a difference two months made for the girls' basketball team. After a 77-38 trouncing in December by the Collegiate Spartans in Wichita, the Trojans battled Collegiate at home Friday and were defeated, 41-31.
The Trojans trailed 7-4 at the end of the first quarter and 19-9 at the end of the first half.
A strong third quarter brought Hillsboro within seven. Even though they held their own in the fourth quarter, the Trojans could not take the lead or the win.
Ratzlaff led the team with 11 points. Fast added nine and pulled down eight rebounds.

Junior varsity
The Hillsboro High School girls' junior varsity basketball team lost Tuesday to Haven, 40-24, on the road.
Going into half-time, Hilslboro led 17-15. But the Wildcats outscored the Trojans in the third and fourth quarters by 17 points to win the game.
Scoring for the Trojans were Whitney Washmon with six points, Laura Skiles with five, JuliAnne Chisholm with four, Marissa Diener and Lora Andrews with three each, Jenny Whisenhunt with two, and Megan McCarty with one.
The team traveled to Marion Saturday to compete in the JV tournament. Hillsboro defeated Chase County, 42-16.
Leading the way in scoring was Jessica Heidel with 15 points.
Other scorers were Megan Peachey and Tina Frick with six each, Skiles and Andrews with four, Jenny Terrell, McCarty, and Sarah Prieb with two each.
In the game against Marion, Hillsboro lost 52-45.
Heidel led the team with scoring, racking up 15 points, followed by Andrews with 10, and Skiles with nine.
Other scorers were Frick with six, Washmon with four, and Peachey with one.
The JV girls lost, 37-32, to Wichita Collegiate Friday at home.
Scoring for the team were Andrews with nine points, Skiles and Frick with six, Peachey, Diener, and Heidel with three, and Washmon with two.
