Hillsboro JV'ers defeat Haven 28-0 years ago

On Monday, the Hillsboro High School junior varsity football team defeated the Haven Wildcats, 28-0 at Haven.

Hillsboro rushed for 87 yards in 30 carries and was seven of 15 for 208 yards in passing and one interception.

"This was a great season opener for us," head football coach Dustin McEwen said. "The team played well."

In the first quarter, Michael Suderman scored on a one-yard run and made the two-point conversion run. Hillsboro led Haven, 8-0.

In the second quarter, Lucas Hamm scored on a one-yard run. Hillsboro scored on the two-point conversion pass from quarterback Kyle Kroeker to Jayce Penner, making it 16-0.

The Trojans scored again in the second quarter with a 80-yard catch by Ben Schafer from quarterback Josh Boese. The two-point conversion pass attempt failed. Hillsboro now led 22-0.

In the third quarter, Boese connected to Schafer with a 65-yard pass scoring six. The two-point conversion pass attempt failed.

Leading rusher was M. Suderman rushing for 29 yards in nine carries and one touchdown.

Leading receiver was Schafer with three receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

In passing, Kroeker was three for seven for 50 yards and one interception. Boese was four of eight for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense held Haven to 18 yards rushing in 25 carries. Haven was two of 11 in passing for 35 yards. Hillsboro forced Haven's quarterback to throw three interceptions.

Leading tackler was Hamm with four solos, one assist, two fumbles, and two sacks. Chad Hughbanks had four solos, one assist, and two interceptions. Justin Moore had three solo tackles, and Troy Frick had one interception.

The team will play the Nickerson Panthers Sept. 15 at Nickerson. Game time is 6 p.m.
