HILLSBORO: Lady Trojans blank Moundridge in two

Hillsboro blasts MCAA opponent

in 13-0, 15-0 wins

The Lady Trojans are making up for lost time.

After going through the first few weeks of the season with nary a win, they grabbed their first two last week from a 4A Nickerson team. And Tuesday they continued their winning ways, smashing Moundridge 13-0, 15-0 to extend a four-game winning streak.

Hillsboro pitchers Marissa Diener and Laura Lindsay had two strong outings. Together they allowed just two hits in two games while striking out 15 batters and walking just one.

In game one, Hillsboro's first monster inning came in the third. After Nikki Streeter and April Funk got outs one and two, Danielle Goosen stepped up to the plate and slammed a single to get on base. She would eventually score, as would the three batters after her: Lindsay, Sara Hamm, and Laci Frantz. With the score 4-0, Hillsboro added on four more in the fourth to push its lead up to 8-0.

Inning No. 5 just made things worse for the Wildcats. Diener, Streeter, Funk, and Goosen made it to base with an error and three singles, respectively. All three would score, as did Hamm. That clinched the 13-0 win.

Diener delivered 10 strikeouts and walked none. She allowed only one hit.

Game two didn't give any relief to the Wildcats. After going down one-two-three in the first inning, Hillsboro poured on nine runs and seven hits in the second. They would go on to win 15-0.

Lindsay pitched in game two, delivering five strikeouts and yielding just one walk and one hit.

The Lady Trojans had just one error in each game, which is a marked improvement from previous outings.

JV vs. Smoky Valley

The junior varsity team hosted Smoky Valley Monday evening, splitting two games with the visiting Vikings.

In game one, Hillsboro lost 3-4, with Tiffany Knaak, Erin Wiebe, Heather Stepanek, and Stephanie Loewen all getting hits. Knaak, Wiebe, and Loewen scored the team's three runs.

Wiebe was the losing pitcher, with four strikeouts, one walk and six hits.

The Trojans yielded five errors, two of which cost the team the game, said coach Stephanie Sinclair.

In game two, the Trojans downed SV 10-9. Scoring two runs each were Katie Baltzer, Laura Skiles, Knaak, and Sarah Prieb. Knaak drove in the winning two runs.

Pitcher Wiebe took the win this time, with one strikeout, four walks, and four hits. The team had seven errors, which made the game much closer than it should have been, Sinclair said.
