HILLSBORO: Lady Trojans disappointed at league meet

The MCAA league meet was a disappointing way for the HHS girls' tennis team to end their season last Saturday. The Trojans came in last place, scoring just two points overall.

Wichita Collegiate came in first at the meet, which was hosted by Smoky Valley in Lindsborg. Smoky came in second, and Lyons took third.

No. 2 singles player Angie Claassen earned Hillsboro's only win of the day. After losing to Smoky Valley in the opening round, Claassen defeated Ellinwood 9-1. But she went on to lose to Haven 9-4 in the seventh place match.

Coach Lynn Wiebe was disappointed with her team's performance. They didn't come ready to play, she said.

In No. 1 singles, Hillsboro's Kelsey Kaufman lost to Collegiate in the opening round, then was defeated by Hesston 9-0. In the seventh-place match, Kaufman fell to Halstead 9-5.

In No. 1 doubles, the duo of Erin Wiebe and Candace Barkman fell to Sterling and Haven.

Finally, in No. 2 doubles, the Trojan team of Jessica Boese and Kelli Just lost to Hesston in the opening round and Haven in the second round. They then fell to Nickerson in the seventh-place match.

The Hillsboro Sports Complex is the site for Class 3-2-1A regional action on Monday, which starts at 7:30 a.m.
