HILLSBORO: Lady Trojans handle visiting Halstead

Make that win No. 301 for Becky Carlson.

The Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team continued their winning ways Friday night with a victory over visiting Halstead. The Lady Trojans had control of the game from the very first minute, and they pulled out the 47-32 win.

Hillsboro jumped out ahead at their very first possession as Amy Duerksen hit an inside two off an Emily Ratzlaff assist. Ratzlaff was able to put Hillsboro's next two points on the board, giving them a 4-0 lead.

Two Halstead foul shots at the 5:30 mark got the team's first points on the board, giving Hillsboro a 4-2 lead.

A few minutes later, Halstead was able to claw its way back to a 6-6 tie, but April Funk's shot on the other end of the court made it an 8-6 contest. At the end of the first quarter, the Trojans held a 10-6 lead.

The girls continued to pump up their lead in the second quarter. Duerksen made a nice pass to Funk, who was cutting to the basket, and the lead was at 12-6. Katie Fast soon made it 14-6.

As the Trojans continued their offensive thrust, foul trouble forced Carlson to send some of her starters to the bench. But that didn't seem to hamper the Trojans as they held onto a 18-10 lead with 1:30 to go in the half. At halftime, Hillsboro led 19-12.

Things really opened up for the Trojans in the third. After a basket by Fast, her team held a 29-18 lead — so far, their largest of the night. Halstead was able to drain a three, bringing them to within eight, at 29-21, but two more by Duerksen bumped up the lead again to 33-21, which is where the score stood at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, Hillsboro's lead continued to grow. With 4:02 remaining, the Trojans held a 41-25 lead. And near the three-minute mark, a two by Sara Hamm gave Hillsboro a 20-point lead, at 45-25.

They would come away with the 47-32 win.

Scoring was evenly distributed for the Lady Trojans. Three players scored 10 points or more: Funk with 12, Fast with 11, and Amy Duerksen with 10.

These three players also had strong all-around games. In addition to her 12 points, Funk grabbed three steals and five rebounds and dished out six assists. Fast had eight rebounds and three steals, and Duerksen had two steals and six rebounds.

Charity Davis grabbed four steals.
