Hillsboro Long-Term Care Unit: Residents enter Olympic events

Residents enjoyed many celebrations throughout the week. One was competing in various Olympic events such has curling, hockey, and an Olympic spelling contest. Alma Rempel and Keith Meljo won medals in the curling event. Ruth Goentzel and Meljo won medals in the hockey event.

Residents dressed in red for Valentine's Day. A special valentine meal was served at noon. Meal selections included ham, choice of mashed or sweet potatoes, choice of coleslaw or strawberry pretzel salad, creamed peas, and cherry pie. Afterward residents gathered in the valentine-decorated activity room to choose the king and queen. Clara Bartel was chosen queen and Leland Kaiser, king.

A short story entitled "The First Date" was written by the residents. Winners for Valentine Jingo were Alma Rempel, John Rempel, and Edith Penner. Later all enjoyed red velvet cupcakes, bacon quiches, and chocolate and strawberry floats. The cupcakes were made by Clara Bartel, Anna Smith, and Marga Ebel.

Several residents attended the Wednesday senior center potluck.

A meeting of the first men's plaid shirt club met Thursday afternoon. They enjoyed playing pool and pitch and refreshments of popcorn and pop.

The Red Hat Society met and received their red hats. Sandy Pattersin, Elaine Lowry, and the evening nursing staff helped with the meeting. The women enjoyed various breads with coffee and hot chocolate.

Florentina Meyer celebrated her 95th birthday with friends Friday at Hillsboro LTCU.

Anna Smith celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday with an open house. Friends and family joined her for the celebration. Anna's husband Lewis and daughter Georgia planned the open house.

The First Baptist Church of Durham brought Sunday services.

Upcoming activities next week include two more Olympic events, presidential trivia, dessert buffet at noon Wednesday (today), and a February birthday party Thursday.
