Hillsboro man dies in U.S.-56 collision years ago

At 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, a car driven by Andrew John Maki, 58, of Hillsboro, crossed the center line on U.S.-56 near Pawnee and struck a semi head-on. Maki died at the scene.

The westbound car Maki was driving was a 1991 Plymouth. The truck was a 2003 Kenworth driven by Charles E. Jones, 51, of Chanute. He was not injured.

Kansas Highway Patrol, Marion County Sheriff, and Hillsboro Police officers responded to the scene.

Marion Emergency Medical Services also responded.

Trooper Mike Ottensmeier said it was not known why the car crossed the center line. He added this was the first fatality accident in a long time on that stretch of road.

The accident is under investigation.
