Hillsboro merchants give back during shopping campaign

Staff writer

Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce business promotions committee is sponsoring Harvest Homecoming this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. "Harvest Homecoming: Giving Back to our Future" is the theme for the three- day shopping campaign that will benefit local schools and businesses.

During these three days, local merchants are encouraged to set aside a portion of their sales for designated projects at the high school and Tabor College. Merchants get to decide the percentage of sales to donate and will post signs to let customers know.

"This is a great way to help our businesses help our schools," said Megan Kilgore, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Director.

The dates of the shopping promotion coincide with Tabor and HHS homecoming celebrations and alumni, family, and friends are expected to be returning to Hillsboro for the weekend.

USD #410 superintendent Gordon Mohn said the school system hopes to use any funds received for after-school programs.

Tabor College plans to use funds donated for improvements to Reimer Field. According to Jim Elliott, Tabor College director of advancement, Tabor may use funds received for a new scoreboard.

"It appears the scoreboard will need to be replaced soon," said Elliott, "and that's a possible use for the funds. We wanted a way to give something to the community as well as to Tabor and this would be one way we could do that."
