Hillsboro Middle School wrestlers compete at home

Staff writer

Hillsboro Middle School wrestling team wrestled against Remington and Chase County Monday, Feb. 28, and Lyons last Thursday in Hillsboro.

The team won seven and lost eight matches against Remington, and won 10 and lost seven matches against Chase County.

"These guys did a pretty nice job for their first matches of the middle school season," said head coach Scott O'Hare.

He said the wrestlers that had participated in the club and those with more experience did really good.

"Many of our losses were the kids that are doing it for the first time," said O'Hare. "I tried to stress to those boys that wrestling is not easy to pick up and find success after only a couple weeks of practice. It will take some time."

O'Hare said he wants the kids to have fun and learn some basic techniques.

"The wins will come with more mat time and experience," he said.

Against Lyons, the team record was 17 wins and eight losses, giving the eighth grade wrestlers a combined season record of 27-10.

"This group of middle school wrestlers has really been improving and doing some goods things," said O'Hare. "For having such a short season, with very limited practice time, they are competing very hard and very well."

O'Hare said that his eighth grade wrestlers had more experience than in the past several years, and credits the kids wrestling program.

"It has also been really exciting to see some of these kids that have just started in the past year or so starting to get the hang of it," said O'Hare. "I just love to see the looks on their faces when they get their hands raised in a victory. You can see it in their eyes that they feel like they have accomplished something after beating someone else in head-to-head competition."

and clarifications

Last week's article about Hillsboro City Council meeting incorrectly stated JAMM Mowing's contract with the city. The total cost for the 2005 mowing season is $18,350 and includes the museum complex, Memorial Park, baseball field, fairgrounds, arena, AMPI, Hillsboro Heights pond, and welcome sign. We regret the error.

In last week's story about Todd Lehman, we incorrectly spelled his name. We regret the error.
