Hillsboro officials to decide fate of building

"We are at a crossroads," Hillsboro Mayor Delores Dalke told Hillsboro City Council Tuesday afternoon. "Are we going to repair this building or not?"

The building in question was the former AMPI building that suffered fire damage several months ago.

Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) inspected the building and determined the only real structural damage was to the roof where the flue was located. Steel decking needed to be replaced and a new roof installed.

Wray Roofing of Newton provided a bid of $90,625 for the removal and disposal of the old roof and the installation of a new one. Engineering costs would be additional.

USD #410 has not committed to using the building and is looking at other options.

In the end, the council agreed that regardless who the tenant might be, a new roof was inevitable.

"The building has been a true incubator for our town," Dalke said, with four other businesses utilizing space, in addition to Hillsboro Police Department.

The council will make a decision about the repairs and insurance when the 2008 budget is discussed.

A complete council report will be in next week's edition.
