HILLSBORO: Softball team splits with Hesston
The Hillsboro softball team hosted Hesston at home Tuesday afternoon and split the doubleheader with the Swathers. They lost the first game 8-3 but came back to take a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
Hesston opened the game quickly, scoring three straight runs to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Another run in the second made the score 4-0.
Hillsboro countered in the third with a run of its own. Danielle Goossen made it to third on a triple, and then a Laura Lindsay sacrifice hit sent Goossen in for the run. The Trojans were down 4-1.
The fifth inning proved to be the clincher for Hesston. They scored four runs off of four hits to take an even bigger 8-1 lead.
In the bottom of the same inning, Hillsboro managed to get runners on base, but only one of them came home to score — Nicole Streeter. She was driven in by Goossen.
The Trojans managed another run in the sixth, sending in Marissa Diener shortly after her triple, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. They lost 8-3.
Things went much better for the Trojans in game two. They began the first inning with two runs by April Funk and Lindsay, then sent in Lindsay and Goossen in the third and fifth innings, respectively, to win the game 4-0.
After coming off a four-game winning streak, Hillsboro's luck faltered on Friday as they dropped two games to Wichita Collegiate.
In game one, the Lady Trojans managed just two hits while losing 2-1 to the Spartans.
Collegiate opened up the game by hitting a single, then scoring on an error, giving them a 1-0 lead.
A similar situation was in store for Hillsboro. In the second, Laci Frantz hit a single and managed to score after an error by the Collegiate catcher. Lindsay also hit a single, this time in the third inning, but was left stranded by Amy Duerksen's third out.
Collegiate broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, sending in one runner to give them a 2-1 lead. Neither team scored for the rest of the game.
Things got worse for Hillsboro in game two. Though the Trojans snagged seven hits, they scored none and allowed six Spartan runners to cross the plate en route to a 6-0 loss.
Hillsboro managed three hits in the first three innings — shots by Goossen, Duerksen, and April Funk — but Collegiate scored its first run in the bottom of the third.
The Spartans broke out in the fourth, sending in four runs while racking up five hits. They scored again in the fifth and took that 6-0 lead to the end of the contest.
