Hillsboro teens at Global Leo Conference

Sixteen Hillsboro Leo Club members are eager to march in a gala July 4th parade today along beautiful Lakeshore Drive, one of many Kodak Moments for the local delegation now attending the First Global Leo Conference in Chicago.

Two Hillsboro youths, Elissa Richert and Kim Spencer, will march in today's International Convention Parade as members of the Kansas Lions Club Marching Band.

The rest of the group from Hillsboro Middle School and Hillsboro High School will share the spotlight with the 55-member Kansas Leo Club delegation.

Before leaving for Chicago, band members showed off their marching skills Sunday at Wichita East High School, followed by a brief concert.

Reached by cell phone Monday afternoon in Chicago, an excited Hillsboro Leo Club sponsor Tonja Wienck was leading her delegates into the McCormick Place Convention Center.

"This is an opportunity for them to interact and mingle with teen-agers from all over the world," Wieneck said, adding that everyone was just as excited as she was.

The Hillsboro delegation raised funds for the trip through various events throughout the school year, and received a donation from the Hillsboro Lions Club. They traveled to Chicago on a bus donated by the Kansas Lions Club.

The first-ever Leo conference, which runs from July 1-5, is being held in conjunction with the 90th Lions Club International Convention.

Other Hillsboro Leos in attendance are, Lonnie Benda, Emett Blecha, Mathew Brown, Cody McMillan, Amber King, Michael Klaassen, James Letterman, Anna Woelk, Evan Wienck, David Vogel, Kayla Letterman, Jessie Brinck, Logan Schroeder, and Marshall Hoffner. Sponsors include Wienck, Sue Railsback , and Tina Letterman.
