Hillsboro tennis team finishes third

The Hillsboro High School girls' tennis team finished third Sept. 4 at the Sterling Varsity Tennis Invitational. Eight teams competed in the tournament.

Coach Lynn Wiebe felt good about the team's performance at Sterling.

"We are continuing to increase our intensity in practice, and it seemed as though we carried that into our matches at Sterling better than we have in past years," Wiebe said.

Conway Springs and Claflin, both known for solid tennis programs, finished first and second respectively.

Gina Andrews, No. 1 singles, lost all three matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Kaufman and Erin Wiebe defeated Claflin 9-7 for a third place finished.

Kelli Just and Emily Railsback made it into the finals of the No. 2 doubles before losing to Claflin in a tiebreaker for the championship.

"Kelli and Emily gave a very good effort all day long," said Wiebe. "They communicated well and played with a new intensity that I hadn't seen in them before."

No. 2 singles player Danielle Hagen defeated Greensburg and then lost to Conway Springs and Hutch Trinity.

"We still had our times that we seemed flat and just were not as focused and intense as we needed to be," Wiebe said. "However, at one time or another throughout the day all the girls showed the ability to play at a higher level than in the past."

The team travels to Smoky Valley today for a 3 p.m. start and will play at Hesston at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The next home meet is Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the sports complex.
