HILLSBORO: Tennis team hosts regionals
It was a disappointing end to a difficult season for the Hillsboro High School girls' tennis team on Monday at regionals.
Hillsboro hosted the regional tournament, which drew 11 teams to the sports complex: Hesston, Lyons, Maranatha, Alma-Wabunsee, Sabetha, Quivera Heights, Kansas City Christian, Salina Sacred Heart, Sterling, Mount St. Scholastica, and Hillsboro.
When the day was over, Hesston was the top team with 12 overall points. Lyons came in second with 10, and Maranatha was third with five.
Taking first place in singles was Mary Kate McKee, a freshman from Sacred Heart. First place in doubles went to the Hesston duo of Amy Burhman and Megan Lamb.
The Lady Trojans were unable to advance beyond the first round, winning only a couple of matches in the "pigtails," said coach Lynn Wiebe. Pigtail matches are preliminary games before the actual bracket.
In singles competition, Hillsboro's Kelsey Kaufman started the day in the pigtails facing Kansas City Christian's Megan Dalbey. Kaufman defeated Dalbey to enter the bracket as the 14th seed.
Kaufman then lost to Maranatha's Hannah Rosenberger 6-1, 6-0.
Angie Claassen was seeded 16th, but she lost in the first round to Lyons player Sally Ebright, who was the No. 1 seed.
The doubles team of Jessica Boese and Kelli Just also faced the No. 1 seed in the opening round. They were defeated by that team, Hesston's Burhman and Lamb, 6-0, 6-1.
Hillsboro's other doubles team of Candace Barkman and Erin Wiebe started the day in the pigtail round. There, they lost to the Quivera Heights team of McCall-Kootz 9-8, 7-6.
Other regional winners were: second place singles, Maria O'Halloran of Hesston; third place singles, Sally Ebright of Lyons; fourth place singles, Betsy Proffitt of Lyons; second place doubles, Annessa Burgess-Jana Montgomery of Lyons; third place doubles, Ashley Moyer and Betsy Timm of Maranatha; fourth place doubles, Darcy Hamilton and Brittany Jansen of Hesston.
