Hillsboro tennis team takes third at Circle
Coach Lynn Wiebe said last week she would like to see some fire from her tennis players instead of just sparks of playing well. Her wish came true at the Circle Tournament Sept. 18 where the Hillsboro High School girls' tennis team finished in third place.
"We played much better at Circle than we had in the beginning of the week," Wiebe said. "Both doubles teams are beginning to work well together. They played with more intensity and did a better job at moving their feet to get in position to make better shot selections."
The No. 1, Kelsey Kaufman and Erin Wiebe, and No. 2, Kelli Just and Emily Railsback, doubles teams both finished second at Circle.
No. 1 singles, Gina Andrews, met up with some tough competition — the 4A state singles champion and a likely contender for this year's 3A singles champion.
"Gina came back from a couple of tough losses to win her last match of the day," said Wiebe.
In the Hillsboro Triangular held Sept. 16 at the sports complex, the girls' tennis team defeated Wichita Collegiate 9-0 and lost to Smoky Valley 4-5.
"We seemed to have gone flat in both of the last two tournaments," Wiebe said. "There were sparks of playing well, but we just weren't able to keep the fire going."
Against Smoky Valley, Hillsboro recorded wins in No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles, No. 4 singles, and No. 5 singles. All single positions won against Collegiate.
"We definitely know what things we need to work on," said Wiebe. "We also know that we can play better because we did in both of the meets prior to this past week."
Hillsboro girls' tennis team finished seventh out of eight teams at the Hesston Invitational held Sept. 12.
The team played Tuesday at Collegiate and will have its last home games tonight. Matches begin at 3 p.m. at the sports complex.
