HILLSBORO: Trojans take first at Hesston meet

Yoder named outstanding senior at Hesston; girls take fifth place

The Hillsboro High School boys' track team continue on a roll of taking first. The Trojan boys came from behind in total points to pass a strong Smoky Valley team and win first place at the 34th annual Hesston Invitational held last Thursday in Hesston. Eleven schools competed at the meet.

"Despite some windy conditions, we ended up with some outstanding results, particularly on the track," head coach Dennis Boldt said.

Lone senior Alan Yoder had an added surprise to help celebrate his birthday on Thursday. Yoder was chosen as the most outstanding senior boy for the Hesston track meet — an honor no other Trojan has achieved. Hesston officials chose one senior boy and girl, who they felt were outstanding during the meet. The two athletes are given medals for their accomplishments.

"Al really got us off on the right foot," Boldt said. "He is our leader and deserved the honor he received."

Yoder won the 100 meter dash and set a new meet record with a time of 10.79. He also won the 200 meter dash and was part of the winning 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams. He placed sixth in the long jump.

According to Boldt and assistant coach Mike Jilka, the boys' team did not fare as well as they had hoped to in the field events.

"We did not have our best day in the field events as a group," Boldt said. "But when we got on the track it was a different story."

Junior Caleb Marsh placed first in the pole vault and the long jump.

But the Trojans did make up for their showing in field events in the running events, placing first in six events that aided in their taking home a first place plaque.

The girls have remained consistent and placed fifth again. With the small numbers, Boldt feels they are doing well.

"The girls once again placed extremely high in the 11-team meet, scoring 50 points."

Sophomore Charity Davis placed first in the long jump. Finishing out the field events were seniors Andrea King and Cheryl Prieb who placed sixth in discus and pole vault, respectively. Junior Mindy Munguya placed second in the triple jump.

Senior Alisa Jost placed third in the 400 meter dash. Jost also anchored the first place 4x400 meter relay team of Elise Matz, Jessica Boese, and Davis.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Prieb, Boese, Matz, and Davis took second.

Davis placed fourth in the 100 meter dash.

"I cannot praise the efforts of our girls enough this season," Boldt said.

Up next is the league meet at 3 p.m. on Friday at Smoky Valley in Lindsborg.

According to Boldt, both the boys and girls are defending champions.

"We look to return and do the best we can to defend the titles they earned last year," he said.

All 10 schools in the league will be represented at the meet. They include Ellinwood, Halstead, Haven, Hesston, Hillsboro, Lyons, Nickerson, Smoky Valley, Sterling, and Wichita Collegiate.

Regionals will be held next Friday at Marion.
