HILLSBORO: Volleyball squad downs Halstead
Staff writer
The Hillsboro High School volleyball team was able to put two in the plus column on Tuesday.
In their second home appearance, Hillsboro defeated Halstead in both matches. It took only three games in each match for the Lady Trojans to pick up those much-needed wins.
At a little past 9 p.m., all the games were finished — something that has been foreign for the team this year. Most of the varsity matches throughout the season have gone to four or five games, which made for a few long nights for the Lady Trojans.
"We really needed those wins last night," coach Collette Burton said. "This should boost the girls' confidence."
In the first match, Hillsboro won 21-17, 23-21, 21-7.
The Lady Trojans came out a little slow but managed to win all three games.
"I think we broke down mentally, which allowed Halstead back in the game," Burton said.
From the serving line, Danielle Goossen was 15 of 15 and five aces for 100 percent, followed by Charity Davis, who was 13 of 15 and six aces. Alisa Prior was seven of eight and two aces.
Davis led the team in serve receives, making nine of 10.
Elise Matz led the team in attacks, making 11 of 18 and six kills.
April Funk was 92.3 percent in sets, making 48 of 52 and 14 assists.
In the second match, Hillsboro won 21-19, 21-16, 21-9.
"I saw that they were focused and ready to play and get the job done," Burton said. "It was a huge difference from the first match."
Three Lady Trojans served 100 percent. Prior was 13 of 13 and two aces, Matz was 11 of 11 and one ace, and Adrien Bebermeyer was eight of nine and one ace. Davis was 11 of 12 and one ace.
Alisa Jost led the team in attacks, making 10 of 11 and three kills, followed by Funk making six of seven with one kill.

Canton-Galva Tourney
The varsity team traveled to Galva Oct. 5 to compete in the 23rd annual Canton-Galva Tournament.
Eight teams competed at the traditional scoring tournament. In Pool A were Solomon, Canton-Galva, Little River, Solomon, and Wichita Area Home School. In Pool B were Hillsboro, Moundridge, Hesston, and Chase County.
Moundridge won the tournament with Little River finishing second and Hesston third.
In the first match, Hillsboro came out fired up and gave a Moundridge a run for their money in the first game. But Hillsboro lost 8-15, 11-15.
In the second game, Bebermeyer served to five straight points to bring the Lady Trojans to an 11-11 tie with Moundridge. But they came up short and Moundridge went on to win the game and match.
"I was impressed with how we played," Burton said. "We went at it hard. We struggled (with) stopping some of their hitters."
Bebermeyer was perfect from the serving line, followed by Funk who was eight of eight. Davis was 13 of 13 and one ace and Prior and Emily Ratzlaff were five of five.
Matz was 10 of 10 in serve receives and led in attacks, making 12 of 14 and two kills. Fast was eigfht of nine and three kills, and Davis was 12 of 14 with two kills.
Funk was 100 percent in sets with 37 of 46 good and nine assists.
The team had at total of 40 digs.
In the second match, the team appeared lose their focus and momentum, losing to Hesston 2-15 in the first game.
"We played right after the Moundridge game, and we didn't play Hesston at our level," Burton said. "It was a disappointing match.
"Hesston had some tough and aggressive servers and our serve receive just broke down."
In the second game, the score was 0-7 when Prior stepped up to serve. When she was finished, the score was 3-7. Then Bebermeyer served 10 straight points, tying the game 13-13.
But the comeback was too late for the Lady Trojans. Hesston went on to win 15-13 and the match.
This ended any hopes for the team to go into the semi-finals.
"I was proud of the girls for trying to come back, but we dug a hole and it's hard to come back against a good team," Burton said.
Bebermeyer was again 100 percent from the serving line making 12 of 12.
Davis led in attacks, making 11 of 11. Fast had five blocks and three stuffs.
The team had 32 digs.
In their final game against Chase County, Hillsboro won 15-12, 15-8.
In the first game, Hillsboro was held to 14 for four rotations because of missed serves and missed opportunities to score.
Again, Bebermeyer led the team in serves making seven of eight and one ace, followed by Davis with 12 of 15 and two aces.
