Hillsboro volleyball team ends season

The Hillsboro High School varsity volleyball team ended its season losing in the first round of 3A sub-state competition last Saturday at Southeast of Saline.

Teams competing were Hillsboro, Hesston, Halstead, Marion, Hutch Trinity, Riley County, Rock Creek and Southeast of Saline.

Hesston went on to win the sub-state championship and advanced to state.

"We went in with a good seed," head coach Tina King.

"When we got there, we were up but came out playing out flat; and Southeast of Saline got a jump on us," she said.

"With rally, it's hard to come back," King said. "We just couldn't come back."

Hillsboro lost both games to Southeast of Saline, 25-19, 25-19.

The team was 90 percent in serving with Danielle Goossen leading the Trojans serving eight of eight.

Laura Lindsay was the leader in serve receives making eight of 11 followed by Alisa Prior who was six of eight. Prior led the team in digs making seven.

Emily Ratzlaff led the team in attacks making eight of 10 with two kills. JuliAnne Chisholm was six of six making five good and one kill.

Amy Duerksen was 16 of 17 in setting with 13 good and three assists. Goossen was 15 of 16 with 12 good and three assists.

Overall, King said as a new coach the season was pretty good.

"I really didn't have starters from last year," King said. "I had a few who subbed in the back row, so it was basically starting with a whole new team this year."

As for looking toward next year, King said, "I think the girls saw that we could do good, and they know what to expect from me as a coach,"

She said now the players can work on the younger ones to get working on conditioning.

The team ended its season with a 14-13 record.
