Hillsboro volleyball team takes fourth at Trojan Invite
It wasn't how the Hillsboro volleyball team would have scripted it, but Saturday's fourth-place finish at the Hillsboro Invitational hurts just the same.
The Trojans, who rolled past Marion in their first match of pool play and defeated Chapman in their third match after three tough games, stumbled against Minneapolis in their second match.
While the two wins vs. Marion and Chapman advanced the Trojans into the first round of the tournament, the loss cost Hillsboro the first seed in the tournament.
The Trojans faced Conway Springs as a result of the loss and fell to the Cardinals in round one and Minneapolis in the consolation bracket.
In the first match of the day, Hillsboro won against Marion in three. Hillsboro won the first game, 25-17, lost the second game, 25-14, but won the third game, 15-11.
Three Trojans were 100 percent in serving. Alisa Prior was seven for seven, JuliAnne Chisholm and Laura Lindsay were six for six each.
Katie Fast and Prior led in attacks with eight good and four kills, and seven good and five kills, respectively.
Prior led the team in digs with 10.
Goossen was 100 percent in sets making 32 of 32 with three assists and 28 good followed by Amy Duerksen who was 31 of 32 with 28 good and three assists.
In the second match, Hillsboro lost to Minneapolis, 25-15, 25-22.
Prior, Goossen, and Lindsay were all 100 percent at the serving line.
Fast led in the attacks making 13 of 14 with eight good and five kills. Prior was eight for eight with seven good and one kill.
In the third match, Hillsboro defeated Chapman, 25-17 in the first game, lost the second game, 25-19, and won the third game in a close one, 15-13.
Prior led in serving, making 12 of 13 with one ace.
Lindsay had 16 digs, followed by Prior who had 13 digs.
Fast led the attack making 18 of 20 with eight kills.
In the semi-final round, Hillsboro went up against Conway Springs, whom they beat earlier in the season, but Conway Springs came out to defeat the Trojans in two, 25-6, 25-6.
Chisholm was seven for eight in attacks with one kill.
Emily Ratzlaff and Prior led in digs with six each.
Both Goossen and Duerksen were 100 percent in setting.
Conway Springs went on to win the tournament by defeating Sterling.
Hillsboro went up against Minneapolis for third place, but was defeated 25-16, 25-12 for fourth place.
Prior was nine of nine with one ace, followed by Lindsay who was seven for seven and one ace.
Duerksen led in serve receives with 12 of 12 for 100 percent.
Prior again led in digs with 10 followed by Duerksen and Ratzlaff with six each.
The team will compete in sub-state Saturday at Southeast of Saline. The time and their opponent was not available at press time and will be announced later.
