Hillsboro welcomes new dentists

Staff reporter

When Hillsboro was left without a dentist, Mayor Delores Dalke went out and found another one.

That's where dentist Brian Kynaston of McPherson Dental Care came in.

"The City of Hillsboro came to the practice and asked us to come to Hillsboro," Kynaston said. "We had the desire to continue to serve and expand our practice, so it worked out well."

Hillsboro Dental Care opened a couple of months ago on Grand Street, across the street from the city building.

Dentist Austin Babcock was brought in by the practice and will share the responsibility of coming to the Hillsboro office with Kynaston, each coming two days per week. The office is closed on Fridays.

The practice provides general dentistry but also can give patients the comfort of sedation while work is being performed.

"Patients who may be anxious can take a pill and sleep through the procedure," Babcock said.

In this area, sedation dentistry is fairly new but in other parts of the country it's been going on for some time.

Not all dentists can provide this service, Kynaston said, because it requires more training.

The dentists of Hillsboro Dental Care also can provide implants, braces, and the usual hygiene, filling cavities, extractions, and root canals.

The primary partner in the McPherson practice, Dr. Jon Julian, has been practicing for 30 years and teaches oral surgeons and dentists. Doing as many procedures as possible in the offices is important.

"Ninety-nine percent of our patients are able to have their dental work performed in one of the local offices," Kynaston said.

The city made the dentists an attractive offer with a lease-purchase agreement for the land and building. Now Hillsboro and area residents have a dental office within a shorter driving distance.

Seven employees, all local and area residents, work at the Hillsboro office.

Babcock is a 2006 graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and practiced in Colorado before moving to Kansas.

Kynaston has practiced for more than four years with the McPherson practice.

"We're excited about being in Hillsboro," Kynaston said. "We're family oriented and we specialize in family care."

Both Kynaston and Babcock said they enjoy treating all age groups — from children through senior citizens.

Each of the doctors have four children.

Kynaston is married to Emily, and they have Taylor, 9, Jessie, 7, Lexi, 5, and Kelsey, 2.

Babcock is married to Nicole, and they have Meg, 6, Andy, 4, Maisie, 2, and Nick, four months.

The families reside in McPherson.
