Hillsboro wins duals and hosts JV tournament

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team won both matches last Thursday at the dual in Lindsborg. The Trojans beat Smoky Valley 64-18 and Hesston 43-28.

"We wrestled pretty well against both teams," said coach Scott O'Hare. "Smoky Valley was a blow out. We expected to win against Smoky Valley, but we did have some pretty solid performances in that match."

Against Hesston, O'Hare said the open weight classes helped the team out.

On Saturday, Hillsboro junior varsity wrestlers hosted a tournament at Hillsboro High School. Fifteen schools participated in the tournament with more than 150 wrestlers.

Thirteen of the 15 Trojan wrestlers that competed in the tournament placed in the top four, and all 15 of the wrestlers won at least one match.

O'Hare was especially pleased with the win by Zach Magnuson in the 103 weight bracket and Zach Jost in the 119 bracket.

"It provided some of my young kids some good competition, and some experience on the mat," said O'Hare. "I think it will be some experience that will serve us at the varsity level as well."

The team's next match will be against Marion and Haven at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 in Hillsboro.

O'Hare isn't sure if the team will match up the same against Marion in the dual but thinks the team is "going into Christmas break feeling good where we're at."
