Hillsboro wrestlers disappointed at state

Staff writer

The hope of bringing home state medals for the eight Hillsboro high school wrestlers was thwarted last Saturday at the KSHSAA 2002 state wrestling championship at Fort Hays State University in Hays.

"We wrestled pretty good," Head Coach Corey Burton said.

"We had a lot of close matches, more than we had in the past — losing by one or two points. Also, we had a lot more wrestlers in more matches than ever before, and everyone had a chance to win this year."

On Friday, in the first round of session one, four wrestlers were able to advance to the next round. They were Bri Ratzlaff (103), Ryan Janzen (119), Carson Greenhaw (145), and Ronnie Davis (215).

In the second-round championship, all four wrestlers lost their matches and had to wait until Saturday morning to wrestle again.

In the first round consolation of the session two, Danny Yoder (125) and James Bina (152) won their matches, after losing their first matches earlier that day. Billy Winegarner (160) and Wade Sorensen (189) both lost two matches and were eliminated from competition.

On Saturday, the team had six wrestlers competing on the back side of the bracket. Ratzlaff, Janzen, Yoder, Greenhaw, and Bina all lost their second match and could not advance.
