Hillsboro wrestlers split at Eureka

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestlers returned to Eureka last Thursday to compete in a dual meet against Council Grove and Eureka. The Trojans split in the dual meet, defeating Council Grove 40-30, but losing to Eureka 48-18.

"We wanted to come away with at least a split at this meet," Head Coach Corey Burton said.

In the match against Council Grove, Burton said he felt the team wrestled well.

Against Eureka, the Trojans were not at full strength which hurt them Burton said.

"We had to forfeit some spots when we didn't want to — due to some injuries and illness," Burton said.

Danny Yoder was out because of illness. Bri Ratzlaff did not wrestle against Eureka because of an injury to his hamstring in the Council Grove match. Billy Winegarner did not compete against Eureka because in the match against Council Grove he "got his airway blocked and passed out," according to Burton. Winegarner was taken to the hospital, but returned to the meet later and traveled home with the team.

"In the Eureka match it would have been a lot closer team score had we had a full team," Burton said.

"Wade Sorensen wrestled a good match against the kid from Eureka," Burton said.

According to Burton, Sorensen of the 189-weight class had been beaten by his Eureka opponent, Zimmerman, at the Eureka Tournament last Saturday. Sorensen only lost to Zimmerman 6-4 in the dual meet on Thursday.

"This will be Wade's main competition at regionals, so he knows now he can wrestle with him and can set out to beat him," Burton said.

James Bina set a new Trojan takedown record after the dual by scoring 46. The old record was 42.

Up next for the Trojans is a dual tournament meet Saturday at Southeast of Saline High School. Five teams will compete, SES, Hillsboro, Marion, Remington, and St. John's Academy. The meet begins at 10 a.m.

Burton wants to remind the community that Hillsboro will host the MCAA league Feb. 9. This meet will start at 10 a.m.

"We've got to defend that title,' he said. "I encourage everyone to come out and support the team."
