HILLSBORO: Yoder breaks MCAA records in powerlifting
Senior breaks bench, clean, squat MCAA records at Sterling

Hillsboro High School managed to rack up some first place spots at the Mid-Central Activities Association league powerlifting contest held last Saturday at Sterling.
"I think we performed really well," coach Kory Unruh said.
Senior Alan Yoder, in the 165-pound weight class, came away with first place all-around honors by scoring first in squat (375), clean (275), and bench (265) for a total of 915 pounds.
"He went for a fourth attempt on all lifts and broke all the records," said coach Kory Unruh.
"Alan is a replica of hardwork paying off. He's been working a while at this, Unruh said.
Yoder established new records in squat (390), clean (290), and bench (275) with a combine total of 955.
Scoring in the boys' division were: junior Brian Thiessen who placed second all-round in the 198-weight class by placing third in squat (330), third in clean (250), and fourth in bench (235) for a total of 815 pounds.
Senior Dustin Hendricks placed fourth all-around in the 198 weight class by placing second in squat (335) and third in bench (270); junior Tyler Stout placed fifth all-round in the 148-weight class by placing fourth in squats (260) and fifth in bench (195); senior Jerod Metcalf placed second for his individual lift in bench (210) in the 148-pound weight class.
In the girl's mid-division junior Alisa Prior placed first all-around by placing second in squat (195), first in clean (115), and third in bench (95) for a total of 405 pounds.
"Alisa did a good job placing first in her division," Unruh said. "This was her first year lifting and she's a junior, so we're looking forward to next year."
Sophomore Amy Duerksen placed second all-around in the power division by placing fourth in squat (200), second in clean (145), and first in bench (135) for a total of 480 pounds. Sophomore Whitney Washmon placed third all-round in the power division by placing third in squat (205), fourth in clean (130), and third in bench (115) with a total of 450 pounds. Junior Danielle Goossen placed sixth all-around by placing fourth in bench (110) in the power division.
"We had quite few first itmers," Unruh said. "And we brought home a lot of medals for only having nine participants."
The state powerlifting contest will be held March 29 at Marion High School.
