HILLSBORO: Yoder places at Eureka tourney
Team splits at dual meet in Lyons
Staff writer
Five Hillsboro High School varsity wrestlers competed last Saturday at the Eureka wrestling tournament in Eureka.
"This was a good strong tournament for us," coach Corey Burton said, "and we wrestled fairly well.
"Danny and James wrestled well," Burton said.
According to Burton, Yoder had a tough match in the finals against a Clearwater opponent who was undefeated so far this year.
Bina won three and lost one.
"James only lost his last match by one point," he said. "We had some close matches throughout the tournament. We have to find a way to overcome and win those close ones in the end."
Daniel Yoder, 140-pounder, was able to win second place with a 2-1 record; James Bina, 160-pounder, took third, finishing with a 3-1 record; and Ryan Janzen took fifth with a 2-2 record.
Tim Glahn and Billy Winegarner did not place at the tournament. Glahn was 1-3 and Winegarner was 0-2 in their respective weight classes.
The wrestling team competed last Thursday in a dual meet against Lincoln and Lyons at Lyons.
Splitting at the meet, Hillsboro lost the first match against Lincoln 36-30, and won 48-28 against Lyons.
"We had a competitive dual against Lincoln," Burton said. "Then we turned around and beat Lyons, which was a good league win for us."
"Now we know we can win the league title again, if we wrestle well."
The team will compete today at 6 p.m. with Council Grove and Eureka at Council Grove.
"This will be another tough dual for us as a team, both schools have full teams," Burton said. "So, our goal is to do well individually and to gain some individual experience."
