HMS eighth grade boys compete in MCAA tournament
Hillsboro Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball competed in the MCAA basketball tournament Feb. 5 and Feb. 7.
Monday night, the team lost to Wichita Collegiate, 42-38. Daniel Jost led the team with 15 points. Clay Shewey scored 13 points; William Munguya and Nolan Dirks, four points each; and Justin Wodke, two.
Saturday the team lost 45-28 in its first game against Lindsborg. Shewey was the leading scorer with 10 points. Isaac Leihy and Andy Klassen each scored four points; Eliot Soyez and Dirks, three points each; and Landon Unruh and Munguya, two points each.
"We shot well against Lindsborg, but couldn't stop their primary scorer," said head coach Dennis Boldt.
The eighth graders pulled away from Marion in the fourth quarter making 11 of 14 free throws for a 43-37 win in the second game. Shewey led the team with 15 points. Munguya scored eight points; Soyez, five; Dirks, four; Klassen and Wodke, two points each; and Leihy, one point.
"We had to play our two games back-to-back," said head coach Dennis Boldt. "I couldn't be prouder of the effort on the court today."
Eighth graders lost last Thursday to Hesston, 43-30, in their last regular season game. Shewey led the team with eight points. Soyez and Holmes each scored seven points; Jost, five; and Klassen, three.
The seventh grade team lost to Hesston 39-19 Feb. 3. Suderman led the team with nine points Tyler Ediger scored six points; and Nathan Vogel and Lane Holmes, two points each.
The mixed team lost 28-23 to Hesston. John Hein and Nicholas Mueller were the leading scorers with seven points each. Lonnie Chapman, Daniel Dick, Matt Richert, and Michael Klassen scored two points each; and Jared King scored one point.
