HMS girls split with Smoky Valley
Hillsboro Middle School eighth grade volleyball teams swept Smoky Valley Thursday at home.
The eighth grade varsity won 25-22, 19-25, and 25-16.
"Smoky Valley has a very good team and we played smart to beat them," said coach Stephanie Sinclair. "Our girls worked hard in game three to score three and four points at a time."
Kelsey Bartel scored 14 points and was 17 for 18 in serving. Candace Ediger scored seven points; Cassie Kroeker, six; Sarah Heidel, five; Abi Humber and Jet Skiles, four each; and Tiffany Rooker, one.
"Tiffany Rooker, Kassidi Luthi, and Cassie Kroeker played very consistent for us tonight," Sinclair said.
The eighth grade junior varsity won 13-15, 25-11, 25-15.
"We played very consistent the last two games," said Sinclair. "Clara Ens served exceptionally well."
Scorers were Ens with 13 points; Rooker, six; Luthi three; Sara Jones, April Young, Shelby Koons, Kelsey Bartel, and Ediger, two points each; Heidel, one point.
The seventh grade teams lost to Lindsborg.
The varsity lost 25-18, 7-25, and 26-28.
"Our girls looked very flat tonight," Sinclair said. "We didn't react very well to their tough servers. Smoky Valley was a good challenge for us."
Scorers were Bri Loewen, 12 points; Tara Heinrichs, eight points; Taryn Mayfield four points; Candace Weinbrenner three points; Samantha Soyez, two points; and Dakota Kaufman, one point.
The junior varsity lost 25-20, 22-25, 23-25.
"This one a very close match," said Sinclair. "Heather Goldsby made 13 consecutive serves."
Scorers were Heather Goldsby with 13 points; Brandi Boucher, nine points; Katrina Muzyka, seven points; Brittany McInnis and Jandee Miles, three points each; Carly Weisback, Mieka Serena, and Amanda Roble, two points each; and Trish Pankratz and Tara Simhiser, one point each.
The middle school plays at Halstead tonight. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
