HMS girls take on Hesston
The Hillsboro Middle School girls' eighth grade basketball team defeated Halstead, 40-11, in the first round of the 2004 MCAA-ML tournament held Jan. 31 at the HMS gym.
Hillsboro seeded fourth was scheduled to play Monday against No. 1 seed Hesston. Because of severe weather, all games were canceled. The game is rescheduled for 7:15 p.m. today at the Robert C. Brown Gymnasium.
"Everything is still up in the air, if we get more bad weather," head coach Mike Jilka said. "Right now, as far as we know, we will play Thursday."
In first round play against Halstead, the team struggled a bit in the second quarter, scoring only three points. At the half, Hillsboro led 14-6.
The Trojans scored 18 points in the third quarter.
Leading scorer for the team was Audrey Weinbrenner, who scored a game high 14 points.
Amanda Faber had eight points; Bobbi Jo Carlson, six; Jenesa Klose and Amanda Bina, four each; and Samantha Heinrichs and Chelsea Bebermeyer, two each.
On Jan. 29 at Hillsboro, the eighth graders defeated Ellinwood .
Leading scorer was Weinbrenner with 10 points, followed by Faber with six.
Other scorers were Klose, Carlson, and Neufeld with four points each, and Courtney Fast and Bina with two each.
The team's record is 8-3.
Seventh grade
The seventh grade team ended its season with a 4-8 record by defeating Ellinwood 23-14, on Hillsboro's home court.
Jet Skiles and Aby Humber scored six points each followed by Sarah Heidel with five.
Other scorers were Kassadi Luthi, Shelby Koons, and Cassie Kroeker with two points each.
HMS C-team played its final game of the season at home against Ellinwood winning 11-10.
Scoring for the Trojans were Anna Woelk with four points, Corrisa Bartel, Jessica Elliot, and Fast with two points each, and Amber King with one.
