Hillsboro Middle School was the site for the middle school quiz bowl competition held March 11. There were 150 participants at the meet with 75 competing on the seventh grade level and 75 for the eighth grade level. The competitors were divided into 15 teams with five members on each team.
Teams competing were Goessel A and B, Ellinwood, Centre, Fairfield, Lyons, Abilene, Smoky Valley, Flinthills, Hillsboro, Halstead, Remington, McPherson, Sterling, Hesston, and Inman.
Goessel Junior High School won first place in the seventh grade division, and Remington Middle School won first place in the eighth grade division.
Students were asked questions by school administrators, Gordon Mohn and Dale Honeck. The questions asked were from science, social studies, math, language arts, fine arts, sports, year-in-review, and miscellaneous categories.
There were seven preliminary rounds, the semi-finals, and finals.
According to coordinator of the contest, HMS coach and extended-learning facilitator for Marion County, Nancy Thomas, HMS students began practicing at the beginning of the school year. The students practiced once a week, and the competition was open to any HMS student.
This is Thomas' eighth year of being involved and spearheading the middle school quiz bowl.
